December Pack Meeting

Last Thursday Pack 209 had a special visitor to it's monthly pack meeting. Santa showed up to talk to each of the scouts. Each boy was given a pinewood derby car kit and a candy cane. The boy also watched as fellow tiger cub, Caleb K. smeared a cream pie in the scoutmaster's face. Caleb earned the honor by being this year's top popcorn seller. He was also listed at the 3rd highest salesmen in the Eric Shores council (~2,500 scouts). Caleb missed the top spot by <$900. Den 4 was also recognized as the top Den selling over $5,500.

pecial thanks to Officer Diane McGuire for the tour of the Perrysburg Police Station this past Thursday. I know the boys and the parents enjoyed learning a little more about what goes on behind the scenes in our city's police department. This was our Den's second Go-See-It of the year and each of the boys earned anther black bead for their Tiger Immediate Recognition Award.

Den Meeting Dec. 4th

Photo: Den 4 singing the "Chili Song" at the November Pack meeting.
Congratulations to all the boys who earned their Immediate Tiger Recognition and Bobcat Rank.
We will have our weekly meetings this Thursday where we will be touring the rest of the Perrysburg Police Station. The boys (and adults) will finally be able to see the building, a squad car and ask all kinds of questions.

The balance of the popcorn is supposed to be in this week. Depending on the night, I may wait until Thursday to hand it out. The money was originally scheduled to be in by Thursday night but, since you may not get the popcorn until then, we will be able to have a little more time. If possible, bring it in. I need to turn it in by Sunday night.

Great Job Den 4!

Den 4 popcorn sales totalled over $5,500 this fall. Great job scout! That means that 1/3 will go to pack 209 and 1/3 will go to Erie Shores Council. That is excellent for our first popcorn sale.

Go-See-It: Ft. Meigs

For our first Go-See-It the boys learned about life in the Perrysburg area in the early 19th century. We traveled to Ft. Meigs State Park to take a peek of the lives of the American Soldiers who lived and fought in the fort overlooking the Maumee River. The boys enjoyed watching our guide fire her musket, demonstrate how to fire a canon, and learn about the things the men ate

Scouting For Food

Today the boys helped support a local food bank by collecting bag of food donated by residents in the Saddlebrook Subdivision. This is an annual event held by the Toledo Area Cub Scouts. Earlier in the week we hung bags on the front door of each home in the neighborhood. This morning we picked up around 50 bags and delivered them to Grace Luthern Church's Food Bank in Perrysburg. The boys learned to volenteer their time to help the less fortunate.

Rain Gutter Regatta

During the October pack meeting the boys participated in the Rain Gutter Regatta. We saw all types of creations sailing down the 6 "rivers". Some successful and others, well, less than successful. One thing for sure is that the boys all seemed to enjoy their efforts. Congratulations to Caleb B., Jacob Y., and Nic K. who all posted combined times of less than 60 sec. for their 4 races.
This Week...
On Tuesday at 6:00 PM we will be meeting at Saddlebrook Park in the Saddlebrook subdivision off of Roachton Rd. in Perrysburg. The boys will be distributing Scouting for Food bags to the neighborhood. This an annual event where the boys learn to help those less fortunate that they are by collecting food to give to local food pantries.

On Saturday we will participate in our first GO-SEE-IT of the year. We are meeting at Ft. Meigs State Park @ 10:00 AM to learn about the early history of the area.

Pack Meeting the Week!

This Thursday night we are having our monthly pack meeting @ 7:00PM in the cafeteria at Ft. Meig's Elementry School. All the boys will be racing in the Rain Gutter Regatta with the model boats they received last month. Some boys have had issues with the glue and paint in the kit so feel free to use your own. If you do not have one or need to give it a "second try", you can purchase a new one at Micheal's Craft Store for $1. I look forward to seeing all your boats.

Meeting Location Change

Just a reminder: We will be meeting at the Perrysburg Police Station on Walnut St. this Thursday (10/9). Please park on Walnut St. or on in the Municipal Building Parking lot. Enter through the glass atrium and follow the Scout signs to the basement.
I hope to finish our Cub Scout Pledge plaques and work on the remainder of the Bobcat requirements. Please bring the boy's Tiger Cub books so we can begin to sign off on their completed requirements.

Camp Miakonda Fall Camporee 2008

This past weekend several scouts and their families joined us the at the Swan Creek District's Annual Fall Camporee at Camp Miakonda. The boys were able to learn new skills, play games, and enjoy sleeping out under the stars. The weather was a bit cold, dropping down to 39 degrees at night. It was a short camp out but, it gave the boys a taste of what is to come. The boys joined the rest of Pack 209 to lead us in the Star Spangled Banner at the end of the campfire Saturday night.
Congratulations to Caleb who won the "Good Turn Award" for doing a good deed during Saturday's events.

First Den Meeting

We have our first den meeting under our belt and it was a blast. The boys seemed to have a lot of fun working with their parents on the Bobcat plaques. Even though the night went by quickly, we were able to get a lot of our first project completed. I look forward to seeing the end results in a few weeks. This week we introduced the boys to the Cub Scout Sign, Salute and Promise. These are 3 of the 8 requirements for their Bobcat badge. Please continue to work with them on memorizing the Cub Scout Promise. It can be found on page 29 of their Tiger Cub Handbook. Another requirement is knowing the Cub Scout Motto. It is easy for them to remember and the basis of all of Scouting.

Cub Scout Motto
DO YOUR BEST!

Our Frist Pack Meeting

Here are some photos of our first Pack Meeting last Thursday. I know all the boys had fun making their own "landfills". I am glad we had such a large turnout. We had 13 boys from our den. That is a great! The leaders said that this was the most active meeting they have ever hosted. Next month we are planning on sailing our boats in the "Rain Gutter Regatta". More news to follow on that one. I look forward to seeing you all at our first den meeting this Thursday at the McGurire's house. This week the boys will begin the trail to earning their Bobcat Rank. See you soon.

Welcome to Tiger Cubs

On behalf of your sons, I would like to thank each of you for introducing them to scouting. The Boy Scouts of America is a wonderful organization. I grew up in Scouts; and, I owe a lot of who I am to the experiences I had during those years. If it weren't for my dad and mom's involvement, it would not have been the same.

I looked over the paperwork we were handed the other night and realized that it's hard not to be overwhelmed. There is a lot of stuff to go through; and I already have a packed schedule with work, family, etc... If it were not for the experiences that I had as a boy, it would be hard for me to commit to such an organization. The truth is that the best experiences that I had with my dad came from Scouting, and I want that for my son and I as well!

More than likely I will make some mistakes, and may even frustrate you once or twice; but, I promise to, "DO MY BEST". Maybe some of the old stuff will come back to me and we may just have some fun. I know the boys will!

Uniform Information
Here is a list of the items the pack requires that each boy have:

Blue Cub Scout Uniform $22.99

Tiger Cub Neckerchief $4.99

TC Slide $2.99

Erie Shores Council Patch $3.40

Troop Number 209 Patches 3 x $1.19

World Scout Crest $1.49

TOTAL = $39.43

These are the prices I saw at Woodville Surplus on Woodville Rd.; however, all Scouts do get a 10% discount. You can also get them at the Toledo Scout Shop in downtown Toledo, or The Scout Shop in Findlay off of I-75.

My wife (mom of 4 & bargain hunter) did a little online research and found some sites that sell gently used scout uniforms for much less. If you are still in need of a uniform, and would like to save a few bucks, send her an email (gopjamey@bex.net) and she'll be happy to assist!
See you this Thursday at our first pack meeting.
